He died suddenly in Rajab of the year 336 AH, having reached an advanced age. Al-Ḥākim, in his History, transmits two hadiths that he received through the judge Abū Bakr al-Ḥīrī on the authority of al-Maydānī.
215 – al-Ṣuʿlūkī, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān *
The imam, hadith master, jurist, and philologist, Abū al-Ṭayyib Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-Ḥanafī (1), known as al-Ṣuʿlūkī.
He heard hadith from Abū al-Ṭayyib Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad al-Dhuhlī, ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Dārābajirdī, and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Farrāʾ. During his travels he also heard from Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb in Rayy, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and their contemporaries in Baghdad.
Those who narrated from him include Abū Sahl al-Ṣuʿlūkī and Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Akhram.
Al-Ḥākim said: “I heard only one hadith from him during a session of scholarly discussion. He was a foremost authority in jurisprudence and philology, and he composed (2) works on hadith. Later he ceased transmitting once he had grown very old—or, he said, when he lost his sight (3)—and we regarded that with sorrow (4).”
He passed away in Rajab of the year 337 AH.
