Al-Azhari told me that both men and women used to attend his preaching circle, so he would place a face-veil over himself, fearing that people might be tempted by the beauty of his countenance.
Al-Azhari then said: “I was later informed that Abū Bakr al-Naqqāsh, the Qur’an reciter, once attended his gathering in disguise (1). When he heard the shaykh’s words, he rose to his feet, revealed his identity, and declared, ‘O shaykh, preaching after you is forbidden!’”
I say: With al-Sibt (2) there is a fascicle of his hadiths with an elevated chain which we have heard.
Al-Khaṭīb said, “He died in Dhu al-Qaʿdah at a little over eighty years of age, passing away in 338 AH.”
