198 – Abū Zurʿa Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Faraj *
He was the Imām and traditionist Abū Zurʿa Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Faraj ibn Mattūya al-Qazwīnī.
Al-Khalīlī listed him, saying, “Reliable, well-versed in this discipline.”
In Qazwīn he heard ḥadith from Muḥammad ibn Masʿūd al-Asadī and Yūsuf ibn Ḥamdān; in Iraq he heard from Abū Khalīfah and Zakariyyā al-Sājī.
He then traveled to Syria in 328 AH, recorded a large number of traditions, and on his return died near Qirmisīn in 330 AH while still a middle-aged man.
Among those who narrated from him are Ibn Lāl al-Hamadhānī and others. His son ʿAbd Allāh related two ḥadiths to us from him.
199 – The ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mattūya **
He heard ḥadith from Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbdak, Kathīr ibn Shihāb, Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Ṣāʾigh, and a number of scholars from Qazwīn, Iraq, and the Hijaz. He died long ago.
Traditionists in Iraq received ḥadith from him on account of his excellent memory.
