The imam, master‐reciter, and ḥadith memorizer Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar, son of the traditionist Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Dāwūd ibn al-Munādī, a Baghdadi and a prolific author.
He heard ḥadith from his grandfather, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Daqīqī, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Ṣāghānī, Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Yazīdī, and several others.
His senior-most teacher was Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā al-Marwazī, the companion of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah.
Those who transmitted from him include: Abū ʿUmar ibn Ḥayyawayh; the reciter Aḥmad ibn Naṣr al-Shadhāʾī; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, a teacher of ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn al-Saqqāʾ; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Abī Hāshim; Muḥammad ibn Fāris al-Ghūrī; and a number of others.
Al-Dānī said: “He learned the Qurʾanic reading by direct presentation and transmitted the variant readings by audition from al-Ḥasan ibn al-ʿAbbās, Abū Ayyūb al-Ḍabbī, Idrīs ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm, al-Faḍl ibn Makhlad al-Daqqāq, and others he listed besides them.
“He was a venerable master of recitation, peerless in precision, eloquent of tongue, versed in the reports, unrivaled in Arabic philology, steadfast upon the Sunnah, trustworthy, and reliable.”
