180 – Ibn Abī Maṭar, ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Maʿāfirī
The imām, jurist, and centenarian; judge of Alexandria and its chief transmitter—Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Maṭar al-Maʿāfirī, the Alexandrian, adherent of the Mālikī school.
He was the sole narrator from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maymūn, a companion of al-Walīd ibn Muslim, and from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbduwayh, a disciple of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah.
He studied law with Ibn al-Mawwāz, and students undertook journeys to learn from him.
Those who received ḥadith from him include the judge Abū al-Ḥasan al-Bilyānī, Dāris ibn Ismāʿīl, Munīr ibn Aḥmad al-Khashshāb, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Naḥḥās.
None of his narrations are found in the Khilʿiyyāt (1).
He died in 339 AH after living one hundred years.

(2) In classical Arabic, nafila means “grandchild.” The Quran states in Surah al-Anbiya, 21:72: “And We granted him Isaac, and Jacob as a nafila, and We made each of them righteous.” It is as if the verse says: We bestowed upon Abraham Isaac as the main gift, and then Jacob as an additional one; the term nafila therefore applies specifically to Jacob, for he is the child of the child (the grandchild).
