Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He was the maternal uncle of al-Ḥasan ibn Mūsā al-Nawbakhtī, and he also wrote: Kitāb al-Radd ʿalā al-Yahūd (Refutation of the Jews); a treatise entitled al-Radd ʿalā Abī al-ʿAtāhiya (Refutation of Abū al-ʿAtāhiya); Kitāb al-Khuṣūṣ wa-l-ʿUmūm (The Particular and the Universal); and Kitāb Istihālat al-Ruʾya (The Impossibility of Vision).

165 – al-Muḥammadābādhī, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad *
The imam, grammarian, and ḥadith master Abū Ṭāhir Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī, known as al-Muḥammadābādhī.
Muḥammadābād is a district of Nishapur.

He heard ḥadith from Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf al-Sulamī, ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Hilālī, and Ḥāmid ibn Maḥmūd in the year 263 AH. Later he travelled and studied with ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, Abū Qilāba, and others.

Transmitters from him include Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ, many of the senior scholars, and Ibn Maḥmish.

Al-Ḥākim said: “I attended his lessons for more than a year, yet I was unable to preserve a single letter of what I had heard from him.”

He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā, 336 AH.

Abū Bakr al-Ṣibghī would defer to his judgment in matters of language. I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar say:

“I, together with Abū Bishr the theologian and Abū Saʿd al-Faʾfaʾ, came to Muḥammadābād after Abū Ṭāhir had finished the session. He inspired great awe, so we said, ‘Would the shaykh graciously dictate something for us to record? When he comes out for the prayer, we will read it back to him.’ He thereupon produced for us three fascicles:”
