he said, “O Jābir, did you notice the spot where I was standing?”
“Yes, Messenger of Allah,” I replied.
He said, “Go to those two trees, cut a branch from each of them, bring them here, and when you stand where I stood, release one branch on your right and the other on your left.”
Jābir continues: I rose, picked up a stone, broke and scraped it until it became sharp, then went to the two trees and cut a branch from each. I dragged them along, and when I reached the place where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had stood, I laid one branch to my right and the other to my left. Al-Aʿmash said: I related this to Sālim ibn Abī al-Juʿad, and he said, “Jābir narrated it to me.” I asked Jābir, “How many were you that day?” He said, “One thousand five hundred.” Al-Bukhārī recorded it.
ʿAmr ibn Murrah and Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān also narrated from Sālim ibn Abī al-Juʿad, from Jābir, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey and were overcome by thirst, so we appealed to the Messenger of Allah. He put his hand in a basin of water, whereupon the water
