until I reached His words: “Then how will it be when We bring from every community a witness, and bring you as a witness over these?” (An-Nisa 4:41).
He said: the Prophet’s eyes overflowed with tears, so I fell silent (1).

(1) Also reported by al-Bukhari, no. 4582, Tafsir section, chapter “fa-kayfa idha ji’na min kulli ummatin bi-shahid wa ji’na bika ‘ala ha’ula’i shahidan” (“How then, when We bring from every community a witness and bring you as a witness against these?”), and no. 5055, Merits of the Quran, chapter “Weeping during the recitation of the Quran,” through the isnad of Sadaqa ibn al-Fadl, from Yahya al-Qattan, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from al-A‘mash; and by Muslim, no. 800, through Hafs ibn Ghiyath. The Prophet ﷺ wept out of mercy for his umma, knowing that he would inevitably testify to their deeds—deeds that might not be upright and could therefore lead to their punishment. The narration is also transmitted by Ali ibn Mushir, both of them from al-A‘mash.
