(2) The word ḥukm here means ḥikmah (wisdom), as in the verse: “We granted him ḥukm while still a boy” (Qur’an 19:12), i.e. wisdom; likewise, “My Lord has granted me ḥukman and knowledge” (Qur’an 21:79). The report is recorded by al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad, 4/254 and 8/18, 14, and by Abu Nuʿaym in Hilyat al-awliyaʾ, 7/269, through several chains from Hisham b. ʿUrwah with this isnad. Parallel narrations exist from: Ubayy b. Kaʿb (Ahmad 3/456; 5/125; Bukhari 10/445–446; Abu Dawud no. 5010; Ibn Majah no. 3755) with the wording “Some poetry indeed contains wisdom”; Ibn Masʿud (Tirmidhi no. 2844); Abu Hurayrah (Abu Nuʿaym, Hilya, 8/309); Hassan b. Thabit (al-Khatib, 3/98); Ibn ʿAbbas (Ahmad 1/269, 273, 303, 309, 313, 327, 332; Abu Dawud no. 5011; Ibn Majah no. 3756; Tirmidhi no. 2845; al-Khatib, 3/443); Buraydah (Abu Dawud no. 5012); and ʿAmr b. ʿAwf and Abu Bakr, both cited by al-Tabarani.
