upon it.
Aflah ibn Humayd narrated from al-Qasim, from ʿAʾishah, who said: “We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the nights of the pilgrimage. When we had dispersed from Mina, we encamped at al-Muḥaṣṣab,” and she related the remainder of the report. Agreed upon.
Abu Isḥaq al-Sabiʿī narrated from Zayd ibn Arqam that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ undertook nineteen campaigns, and after he had migrated he performed the Farewell Pilgrimage; he did not perform any pilgrimage after that.
Abu Isḥaq had earlier added: “and one (campaign) was in Mecca.” Agreed upon.
It is related from Ibn ʿAbbās that he disliked the expression “the Farewell Pilgrimage” and would instead say, “the Pilgrimage of Islam.”
Zayd ibn al-Ḥabbāb said: Sufyān narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Jābir, that the Prophet ﷺ performed three pilgrimages before he migrated and one pilgrimage after he migrated, together with an ʿumrah. He drove thirty-six sacrificial camels, and ʿAlī brought the remainder from Yemen—among them a camel that had belonged to Abū Jahl, in whose nose there was a silver ring—and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed it.
This narration is unique to Zayd, and it has been said that he erred, for what is actually reported is from Sufyān, from Abū Isḥaq, from Mujāhid, as a mursal report.
Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqī said: The phrase “and a pilgrimage together with an ʿumrah” is mentioned only by Anas—may Allah be pleased with him—and by those Companions who held that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed qirān, combining the two rites. As for those who maintain that he performed ifrād, keeping them separate, this wording is scarcely acceptable to them because of the discrepancies and other issues in its chain of transmission.
