Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

among his companions the sacrificial animals, yet neither he nor his companion received a share. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then had his head shaved while wrapped in his cloak and handed the hair to him; he in turn distributed portions of it among several men. The Prophet next clipped his fingernails and passed them to his companion, and that lock of hair is still preserved among us, dyed with henna and katam.

ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd reported: al-Rabīʿ ibn Ṣubayḥ narrated to us, from Yazīd al-Raqāshī, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Hajj on a worn-out saddle and a cloak worth—indeed, perhaps not even worth—four dirhams, and he prayed: “O Allah, grant a pilgrimage free of ostentation and reputation-seeking.” Yazīd is weak.

Abū ʿUmays narrated from Qays ibn Muslim, from Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb: A Jew came to ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Commander of the Believers, there is a verse in your Scripture; had it been revealed to us Jews, we would have made the day of its revelation a festival.” He asked, “Which verse?” The man replied, “Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and approved for you Islam as a religion” (al-Māʾidah 5:3). ʿUmar said, “I know exactly the day and the place it was revealed: it came down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at ʿArafāt on a Friday.” Agreed upon.

Hammād ibn Salamah related from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār: I was with Ibn ʿAbbās when a Jew was present. He recited, “Today I have perfected your religion for you…” (al-Māʾidah 5:3). The Jew said, “If it had come down to us, we would have taken that day as a festival.” Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “Indeed, it was revealed on a festival: a Friday, the Day of ʿArafah.” Its chain is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.

Ibn Jurayj narrated from Abū al-Zubayr, who told him that he heard Jābir say: I saw the Prophet ﷺ stone the Jamrah while mounted on the Day of Sacrifice, saying, “Take….”
