Al-Muqtadir later appointed him judge over Sijistān (1). Al-Qāhir then sought his legal opinion concerning the Sābians; he issued a ruling that they should be put to death, for they worship the heavenly bodies. The caliph resolved to carry this out, but the Sābians collected a large sum of money and presented it to him (2), so he relented toward them (3).
Al-Iṣṭakhrī died in Jumādā al-Ākhira, 328 AH, at a little over eighty-eight years of age. He had studied jurisprudence with the disciples of al-Muzanī and al-Rabīʿ.
