Among those who narrated from him were: Ibn al-Muzaffar, Ibn Shāhīn, al-Dāraqutnī, ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar al-Rāzī the jurist, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Kaysānī, and his son, the ḥadith master ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAllak.
He died in 325 AH.
Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAlī informed us in his book; Dāwūd ibn Aḥmad informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar, the judge, informed us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAlī informed us; Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraqutnī informed us, saying: ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad al-Jawharī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq al-Kājaghūnī (1) narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Kabīr ibn Dīnār al-Ṣāʿigh narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey. We found no water with which to perform ablution or to drink. The Messenger of Allah had with him a small leather water-skin (idāwah) (2) containing a little water. He poured it into a vessel, placed his palm over it, and then said, “Come here.”
I saw water gushing out between his fingers like flowing springs (3).
(1) Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 3/848, records the name as “al-Kajaghari,” which is a copyist’s error. Tabsir al-Muntabih, 3/1202, gives it as “al-Kashghuni” and notes—citing Ibn Nuqtah—that the consonant between the shin and the jīm is intermediate in pronunciation.
(2) A small vessel used for carrying water.
(3) Also transmitted by Ahmad, 1/401–402, and by al-Nasaʾi, 1/60 (Book of Purification, “Chapter on Performing Wudu from a Container”), through the isnad of ʿAbd al-Razzaq → Sufyan → al-Aʿmash. The chain is sound. At the end al-Aʿmash adds: “Salim ibn Abi l-Jaʿd told me that he asked Jabir, ‘How many were you that day?’ He replied, ‘One thousand five hundred.’” Al-Bukhari, 6/432 (no. 3579, “Signs of Prophethood in Islam”), relates the incident via Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna → Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri → Israʾil → Mansur → Ibrahim → ʿAlqama → ʿAbd Allah: “We used to count miracles as blessings, whereas you count them as warnings. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey and water became scarce. He said, ‘Look for any remaining water.’ They brought a container with a little water, whereupon he placed his hand in it and said, ‘Come for the blessed purification; blessing is from Allah.’ I saw water springing from between the fingers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we even heard the food glorifying Allah while it was being eaten.”
