He kept the company of al-Junayd and of ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān al-Makkī. He remained a neighbour of the Sacred Precinct for a time and passed away in Mecca.
Abū ʿUthmān al-Maghribī said, “I have not seen among our shaykhs anyone more radiant than he.” (1)
Al-Sulamī relates: “I heard Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Rāzī say, ‘I heard Abū Yaʿqūb al-Nahrajūrī speak about fanāʾ (self-annihilation) and baqāʾ (subsistence):
‘Fanāʾ is the disappearance of one’s sight of the servant’s action for Allah, while baqāʾ is the persistence of one’s sight of Allah’s action in the decrees.’” (2)
It is also reported from him that he said, “Ṣidq (truthfulness) is to be in accord with the Real in private and in public; its true reality is to speak the truth in situations of mortal danger.” (3)
Ibrāhīm ibn Fatik said: “I heard Abū Yaʿqūb remark, ‘The world is an ocean, the Hereafter is the shore, the vessel is taqwā (God-fearing piety), and people are travellers.’” (4)
And he said, “Yaqīn (certainty) is the witnessing of faith in the unseen.” (5)
He also said, “The loftiest of states are those that are joined with knowledge.” (6)
Al-Nahrajūrī died in 330 AH.
