Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Narrated from him were: Abū al-Faḍl ibn al-Maʾmūn and Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn al-Namirī.

He passed away in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, 338 AH, at the age of seventy, after which his bier was carried to Baghdad.

87 – al-Murtʿish, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī*

The devoted ascetic and saint, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh (1) ibn Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī (2), al-Hīrī, was a disciple of Abū Ḥafṣ al-Naysābūrī and kept the company of Abū ʿUthmān al-Hīrī (3) as well as al-Junayd (4). He later settled in Baghdad.

People used to say, “The marvels of Baghdad in matters of Sufism are three: the quips of Abū Muḥammad al-Murtʿish, the anecdotes of al-Khuldī (5), and the subtle indications of al-Shiblī (6) (7).”
