Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Sharif al-Radi composed an elegy for him (1). He lived for seventy-three years (2) — may Allah have mercy on him.

63 – Al-Qādir bi-llāh, Aḥmad son of Prince Isḥāq ibn al-Muqtadir

He was the caliph Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad, son of Prince Isḥāq, son of al-Muqtadir Jaʿfar ibn al-Muʿtaḍid, an ʿAbbāsid from Baghdad. His mother’s name was Tamannī (3). He was born in 336 AH. His mother passed away during his reign, having become infirm, in 399 AH.

He was fair-skinned, with a thick beard which he used to dye; devout, learned, dedicated to worship, dignified — one of the most eminent and exemplary of the caliphs. Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ (4) counted him among the Shāfiʿīs. He studied jurisprudence under Abū Bishr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Harawī (5).

(1) Its opening verse runs: “Which peak was shattered from which range?—through it a barren land became fertile after a long drought; never had the tribe of Nizar before this seen a mountain borne upon men’s shoulders….” The poem is much longer; see the Diwan, 2/666 (Beirut ed., 1309 AH). (2) Al-Muntazam, 7/224, states that he “lived seventy-six years,” a figure that seems plausible, for al-Taʾiʿ was born in 317 AH and died in 393 AH. (3) Tarikh Baghdad, 4/37, spells the name “Yumna,” whereas al-Kamil, 9/80, has “Dumna,” and another reading is “Tamanni.” (4) ʿUthman b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Musa al-Kurdi, Taqi al-Din, known as Ibn al-Salah, was a leading authority in Qurʾanic exegesis, hadith, fiqh, and biographical evaluation; he is the author of the famous Muqaddima on hadith methodology. He died in Damascus in 643 AH; see Wafayat al-Aʿyan, 3/243-245. (5) A biographical notice on him appears in Tarikh Baghdad, 5/88-89.
