from him.(1) Then two Daylamites entered upon the caliph and asked him for their stipend. He stretched out his hand for them to kiss, but they yanked him from the throne of the caliphate and dragged him off by his turban,(2) while his residence was plundered. They detained the qahramāna and a number of others, and drove al-Mustakfī on foot to Muʿizz al-Dawla’s house, where Muʿizz deposed him and put out his eyes.
Thus his caliphate lasted sixteen months. They thereupon pledged allegiance to al-Faḍl b. al-Muqtadir and granted him the honorific al-Muṭīʿ li-Allāh.
Al-Mustakfī remained imprisoned until he died in 338 AH at the age of forty-six, while Muʿizz al-Dawla held sole authority over Iraq.
The caliphal seat grew exceedingly weak, and under the Buyids Shiʿism (rafḍ) and Muʿtazilism became openly manifest—may Allah grant pardon.
The blinding of al-Mustakfī, after he had been humiliatingly forced to abdicate, took place in Jumada al-Ākhira 334 AH; he lived four years after his removal and blinding.(3)
