by his grandfather—the emir Bilal b. Abi Burda (1). It is also reported that he lived on until the year 330 AH.
52 – al-Barbahari, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. ʿAli b. Khalaf
The shaykh of the Hanbalis, a paragon, an imam—Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. ʿAli b. Khalaf al-Barbahari (2), the jurist.
He spoke the truth openly, summoned people to the transmitted tradition, and for Allah’s sake feared no critic’s blame.
He kept company with al-Marwadhi (3) and with Sahl b. ʿAbd Allah al-Tustari (4).
It is said that when al-Ashʿari (5) arrived in Baghdad he came to Abu Muhammad al-Barbahari and began to say, “I have refuted al-Jubbai, the Magians, and the Christians.”
Abu Muhammad replied, “I have no idea what you are talking about; we recognize only what Imam Ahmad said.”
So he left (6) and wrote the Ibana (7), but it was not accepted from him.
