Al-Ḥākim said: He was among the most dependable and exacting transmitters, an itinerant scholar who roamed the various regions. He lived for eighty-seven years (1).
Abū Yaʿlā al-Khalīlī said: A great ḥadith master; he heard from Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ, Qaṭn ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and a number of others (2).
Al-Ḥākim also stated that he died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 320 AH (3).
Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh informed us; Abū Rūḥ al-Bazzār reported to us; Zāhir ibn Ṭāhir narrated to us; Abū Saʿīd the physician told us; Shāfiʿ ibn Muḥammad al-Isfarāʾīnī related to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥamdūn the ḥadith master narrated to us; Abū Ḥudhāfa al-Madanī reported to us; Mālik transmitted, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Knowledge is of three kinds (4): a decisive verse, an established sunnah, and the admission ‘I do not know.’”
This report is one of the points on which Abū Ḥudhāfa Aḥmad ibn Ismāʿīl (5) was criticized; the sound ruling is that it is mawqūf, a statement of Ibn ʿUmar himself.
