Among those who narrated from him were al-Dāraqutnī, Abū Bakr ibn Shādhān, and al-Muʿāfā al-Jurayrī.
Al-Dāraqutnī said, “He is weak; we recorded from him many objectionable reports (1), and he composed a great deal of poetry.”
Abū al-Fatḥ ʿUbayd Allāh (2) ibn Aḥmad al-Naḥwī said, “They branded him a liar in his claim of having heard from Abū Kurayb and others (3).”
Al-Khaṭīb said, “He fabricates hadith against trustworthy transmitters (4).”
I say: He forged the hadith, “There is no prophet after me (5); and if there were to be one, it would have been you, O ʿAlī (6).”
He died in 325 AH.
He left a small fascicle of narrations from al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār.

(6) The hadith "la nabiyya baʿdi" (There will be no prophet after me) is reported by al-Bukhari (4416) in the Book of Military Expeditions, chapter on the Expedition to Tabuk, and by Muslim (2404) on the authority of Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Tabuk and appointed ʿAli as his deputy. ʿAli said, "Will you leave me behind with the children and women?" The Prophet replied, "Are you not content to have the same standing with me as Harun had with Musa, except that there will be no prophet after me." A version from Abu Hurayra appears in al-Bukhari 6/408 and Muslim (2286) with the wording, "and I am the seal of the prophets," and another from Jubayr ibn Mutʿim in al-Bukhari 8/492 and Muslim (2354).
Al-Bukhari (6194) also narrates in the Book of Etiquette through Ibn Numayr—Muhammad ibn Bishr—Ismaʿil ibn Khalid: I asked Ibn Abi Awfa, "Did you see Ibrahim, the Prophet’s son?" He answered, "He died young. Had it been decreed that a prophet would come after Muhammad, his son would have lived; but there is no prophet after him."
Ahmad 4/154 and al-Tirmidhi (3686) transmit, through Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Muqri—Haywa—Bakr ibn ʿAmr—Mishrah ibn Haʿan—ʿUqba ibn ʿAmir, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If there were to be a prophet after me, it would be ʿUmar." The chain is sound (hasan). Al-Hakim 3/85 declared it sahih, and al-Dhahabi agreed. Two corroborating reports exist—from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri and from ʿIsmah in al-Tabarani—though both are weak; see Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 9/68.
