My father was among the deputation of Banū ʿĀmir that came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “You are our master, the one who has shown us the greatest favor.” The Prophet replied, “Mah, mah! Say what you usually say and do not let Satan embolden you. The Master is Allah, the Master is Allah.”
Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār related: Fāṭimah bint ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muʾmila told me, from her father, from her grandfather Muʾmila ibn Jamīl, who said: ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet said, “O ʿĀmir, accept Islam.” He replied, “I will accept on condition that the nomads be under my authority and the townsfolk under yours.” The Prophet said again, “O ʿĀmir, accept Islam,” but he repeated the same demand. The Prophet said, “No.” ʿĀmir turned away, saying, “Muhammad, I shall flood you with sleek cavalry and clean-shaven warriors; I will tie a horse to every palm-tree.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed, “O Allah, protect me from ʿĀmir and guide his people.”
ʿĀmir set off, and when he reached the outskirts of Medina he encountered a woman of Banū Salūl. He dismounted his horse and slept in her house, where a swelling seized his throat. He leapt onto his horse, seized his spear, and rode about crying, “A swelling like a young camel’s swelling, and death in the house of a Salūlī woman!” He kept on in that state until he fell down dead.
Ibn Isḥāq said: A delegation of Banū ʿĀmir came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which included ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl, Arbad ibn Qays, Khālid ibn Jaʿfar, and Ḥayyān ibn Aslam. They were the leaders—and the devils—of their people. ʿĀmir, the enemy of Allah, advanced toward the Messenger intending treachery. His people said to him, “The people have already entered Islam.” He replied, “I swore that I would not desist until the Arabs followed my lead—shall I now follow the lead of this youth from Quraysh?” Then he said to Arbad, “When we reach him I will keep his face turned toward me; once I do that, strike him with the sword.”
When they reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ʿĀmir said, “Muhammad, give me leave to speak alone with you…”
