He received hadith from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah, Shuʿayb ibn Ayyūb aṣ-Ṣarīfīnī (1), Hārūn ibn Isḥāq al-Hamdānī, and others of their rank.
Those who narrated from him include: ad-Dāraqutnī, Abū Bakr ibn Shādhān, Abū Ḥafṣ ibn Shāhīn, ʿĪsā ibn al-Wazīr (2), and many others.
Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus said, “Reliable, a ḥāfiẓ.” (3)
ad-Dāraqutnī said, “Trustworthy and dependable; I have never seen books more accurate or better than his.” (4)
I say: He transmitted hadith in Damascus, Egypt, and Baghdad.
He died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, 321 AH.
I have obtained several elevated chains from his narrations.
19 – Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥammād ibn Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl
The imam, the ḥāfiẓ of his age, Ḥammād ibn Zayd al-Azdi.
(1) Pronounced with an open sad, a kasra on the ra, a sukun on the dotted ya, the fa placed between the two ya’s, and ending with a nun. The nisba derives from Sarifin, the name of two villages—one in the province of Wasit, the other in the province of Baghdad. Shuayb ibn Ayyub belonged to the first. In Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 1/351, the name is misprinted as “al-Sairafi”; see also al-Ansab, 8/58.
(2) Omitted in the base manuscript. This Isa is the son of the righteous vizier Ali ibn Isa, whose biography appears below as no. 140 in this volume. For Isa ibn Ali, consult Tarikh Baghdad, 11/179-180.
