11 – al-ʿAssāl: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Jarīr
The imam, the trustworthy ḥadith scholar, Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith ibn Jarīr (1) al-Aswānī, the Egyptian, known as al-ʿAssāl.
He heard from Muḥammad ibn Rumḥ, ʿĪsā ibn Ḥammād Zughbah, and a number of others, and he was the last person to narrate from Ibn Rumḥ.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus, Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī, Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥaḍramī—the father of Yaḥyā al-Ṭaḥḥān—ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī Jaddār, Maymūn ibn Ḥamzah al-ʿAlawī, and others.
He was one of the freedmen of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān—may Allah be pleased with him.
Ibn Yūnus (2) declared him reliable and said that he lived past ninety.
He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, in the year 321 AH.
= Al-Busiri, in his Zawaid (fol. 66), judges the chain to be hasan (reliable). The same episode is also narrated from Abu Hurayrah in: al-Bukhari, 3/62, “Acts during Prayer: the Chapter on Women’s Clapping”; Muslim, no. 422, “Prayer: the Tasbih of Men and the Clapping of Women”; al-Darimi, 1/317; Abu Dawud, no. 939; al-Nasaʾi, 3/11; al-Tirmidhi, no. 369; Ibn Majah, no. 1034; and Ahmad, 2/261, 317, 376, 432, 440, 473, 479, 492, 507, 529.
From Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Saʿidi it is reported by Ibn Majah (no. 1035), Ahmad (5/336, 338), al-Darimi (1/317), Malik (1/163–164), al-Bukhari (2/139, 141, “Congregational Prayer”), Muslim (no. 421), and Abu Dawud (no. 940). From Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah it appears in Ahmad (3/348, 357).
