Thaqīf were left speechless, and an elderly woman among them cried out, “The babes at the breast have surrendered her while the champions of battle have stood aside!” The delegation then travelled on until they reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, bringing her ornaments and garments, and he distributed them.
Ibn Isḥāq says: Thaqīf remained for several months after the killing of ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd. He then tells of their coming to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, their acceptance of Islam, and how the Prophet sent Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb and al-Mughīra to demolish the idol.
Saʿīd ibn al-Sāʾib, reporting from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿIyāḍ on the authority of ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ, relates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed him to establish the mosque of Ṭāʾif on the very spot where their idol had stood.
This report was transmitted by Abū Hammām Muḥammad ibn Muḥabbib al-Dallāl from Saʿīd—and Allah knows best.
When Ibn Isḥāq had finished recounting the story of Thaqīf, he went on to describe the pilgrimage that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq led for the people.
