“Why do you not recite the qunūt (standing supplication) in the dawn prayer?”
He replied, “For the body’s ease, in deference to the local custom, and out of consideration for household and children.”

Al-Ḥākim says: I heard Abū Saʿīd Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Karābīsī in Sarakhs relate:
“Abū Aḥmad ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAdī arrived among us in Sarakhs on his way to Bukhārā. When he returned, someone said to him, ‘We have never seen in this region anyone comparable to Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Daghūlī.’ He replied, ‘What is this talk? In all my travels I have never met anyone like Abū al-ʿAbbās.’”

Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, the ḥadith master, said: “We travelled with Imām Abū Bakr ibn Khuzaymah to Samarqand to congratulate the martyr-emir and to offer condolences for the late Emir Abū Ibrāhīm. On the return journey I said to Ibn Khuzaymah, ‘On this trip we encountered no one the equal of Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Daghūlī.’ Abū Bakr replied, ‘Nor have I ever seen anyone like Abū al-ʿAbbās.’”

I say: Ibn Khuzaymah would not have spoken thus except on account of something weighty—the sheer breadth of Abū al-ʿAbbās’s learning, may Allah have mercy on him.

Al-Ḥākim also reports: I heard Yaḥyā ibn ʿAmr al-Bustī say:
“I heard Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Daghūlī ask Abū Ḥusayn al-Ḥajjājī, ‘How is Abū ʿAlī the ḥadith master, and what is he composing now?’ He answered, ‘At present he is writing a rebuttal of Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj.’ Thereupon Abū al-ʿAbbās recited:

‘Let a thousand lines be ascribed to al-Huṭayʾah;
so it is—the living outstrips every dead.
And thus does Diʿbil, in foolish vanity,
hope to attain the range of al-Kumayt.
If ever the living quarrels with one who fills his grave,
he is but the son of a wanton woman, slick with oil.’”
