Ishāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Ṭalaqī told us, Muḥammad b. Khālid al-Rāzī told us, Abū Yūsuf the judge told us, from ʿAṭāʾ b. ʿAjlān, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd:
“That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pronounced four takbīrs over his son.” (1)
He added: “The accounts that speak of the depth of his sorrow for him—meaning his son—are mass-transmitted: that he walked barefoot behind the bier, and that he was informed by Gabriel, on behalf of Allah, Exalted is He, that ‘for him in Paradise there is a wet-nurse who will complete his suckling.’” (2)
…Hanif reported that some Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed him… It says: they went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they reached her grave; they lined up behind him just as one lines up for the funeral prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the prayer over her and pronounced four takbirs, exactly as is done for the funeral prayer.
Al-Nasa’i, Sunan, Funerals, “Chapter: Supplication,” 4/75, through the isnad Qutayba – al-Layth b. Saʿd – Ibn Shihab – Abu Umama b. Sahl b. Hanif: “The Sunnah in the funeral prayer is to recite Umm al-Quran (surat al-Fatiha) quietly after the first takbir, then pronounce three further takbirs, and give the taslim after the last one.”
Its chain is sound; this was affirmed by al-Nawawi and by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari, 3/164.
Al-Bayhaqi, Sunan, 4/35, also records with a sound chain from ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Awfa that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pronounce four takbirs.
(1) ʿAtaʾ b. ʿAjlan al-Hanafi, Abu Muhammad al-Basri, the perfume-seller. In al-Mizan, 3/75, the author gathers the following judgements: Ibn Maʿin – “worthless, a liar”; on another occasion, “fabrications were supplied to him and he would narrate them.” Al-Fallas: “liar.” Al-Bukhari: “his hadith is munkar.” Abu Hatim and al-Nasa’i: “abandoned.” Al-Darqutni: “weak, not taken into account,” and elsewhere, “abandoned.”
The hadith in question was transmitted by al-Bazzar in his Musnad (no. 816) through ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Malik b. Mughul – al-Jariri – Abu Nadra – Abu Saʿid. Al-Haythami, Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 3/35, says: “Reported by al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat; in its chain is ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Malik b. Mughul, who is abandoned.”
Abu Dawud (no. 3187), Funerals, “Chapter: Prayer over a child,” and Ahmad, 6/267, relate—through Ibn Ishaq – ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Bakr – ʿAmra bt. ʿAbd al-Rahman—that ʿAʾisha said: “Ibrahim, the Prophet’s son, died when he was eighteen months old, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pray over him.” According to Ibn Hajar in al-Isaba, 1/93, the chain is hasan (reliable).
Imam Ahmad, 3/281, also records with a sound chain from Anas b. Malik that when he was asked, “Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray over his son Ibrahim?” he replied, “I do not know.”
