Using the same chain: from Khālid al-Haddāʾ, from ʿIkrimah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
“No man who ever laced his sandals, mounted a riding beast, or sat upon a saddle was better than Jaʿfar.” (1)
This report is reliably traced back to Abū Hurayrah, and no one should claim that his position was that Jaʿfar is superior to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. The wording is not meant absolutely; the prophets and messengers are obviously excluded, and it is clear that Abū Hurayrah did not intend to include Abū Bakr or ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them both.
Those who died in the same year as Ibn Ṣāʿid include: Abū ʿArūbah al-Harrānī, the ḥadīth master; the judge Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn Buhlūl al-Tanūkhī; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Mughallish al-Baghdādī, a disciple of Luwayn; Ismāʿīl ibn Dāwūd ibn Wardān al-Miṣrī, a student of Ibn Rumḥ; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Bashshār al-Baghdādī, the grain-merchant and Qurʾān reciter; the musnid Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Ḥalabī; the ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Isfarāyīnī; and Abū—
Abu Saʿid al-Khudri used to say, “A dinar for a dinar and a dirham for a dirham.” I objected, “Ibn ʿAbbas does not say that.” Abu Saʿid replied, “I asked him, ‘Did you hear it from the Prophet ﷺ or find it in the Book of Allah?’ He answered, ‘Both. I would not speak while you are better informed about the Messenger of Allah than I. Yet Usama related to me that the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘No riba exists except in deferred exchange (nasiʾa).’ ”
Reported by Muslim, no. 1596 (Book of Musaqat); al-Nasaʾi, 7/281; and Ahmad, 5/200, 209 through several chains transmitting from Sufyan ibn ʿUyayna → ʿAmr ibn Dinar → Abu Salih.
Also recorded by Ahmad, 5/204, and Muslim, no. 1596 (102) through Sufyan → ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Yazid → Ibn ʿAbbas → Usama; and by Ahmad, 5/202 through Ibn Ishaq → ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAli ibn Abi Rafiʿ → Saʿid ibn al-Musayyab → Usama.
(1) Chain sound. Tirmidhi, no. 3768 (Virtues, chapter on Jaʿfar ibn Abi Talib) also transmits it and graded it “hasan sahih”; al-Hakim, 3/209, declared it sound, a judgment endorsed by al-Dhahabi.
al-ihtidhaʾ: putting on footwear.
al-mataya (pl. of matiya): riding-camels; i.e., one mounts their backs.
al-kur (with damma on the kaf): a camel saddle, also called al-rahl.
