Paradise except a Muslim soul, no polytheist may perform the pilgrimage after this year, and no one is to circumambulate the House naked. Whoever enjoys a pact with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his pact remains valid until its appointed term. People are granted four months from the day this proclamation is made, so that every tribe may return safely to its homeland; after that, no covenant remains for any polytheist.”
ʿUqayl reported from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, that Abū Hurayrah said: “During that ḥajj Abū Bakr sent me among a group of heralds whom he dispatched on the Day of Sacrifice to announce at Minā that no polytheist was to perform the pilgrimage after that year and that no one was to circumambulate the House unclothed.”
Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān added: “The Prophet ﷺ then sent ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib after him and instructed him to proclaim Sūrat Barāʾah. So ʿAlī proclaimed it with us to the people of Minā on the Day of Sacrifice: that no polytheist was to make the pilgrimage after that year and no one was to circumambulate the House naked.” This report is recorded by al-Bukhārī, and both al-Bukhārī and Muslim relate it through the transmission of Yūnus from al-Zuhrī.
Sufyān ibn Ḥusayn narrated from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Abū Bakr and then sent ʿAlī after him. In that account it says: “ʿAlī would make the proclamation, and when he paused Abū Hurayrah would stand up and repeat it.”
Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī related from Zayd ibn Yathīʿ, who said: “We asked ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—‘With what message were you sent in Dhu al-Ḥijjah?’ He replied: ‘I was sent with four declarations: No one will enter Paradise except a believing soul; no one is to circumambulate the House naked; after this year no believer and unbeliever are to gather together in the Sacred Mosque; and whoever has a treaty with the Prophet ﷺ, his treaty lasts until its term, while anyone without a treaty has a respite of four months.’ And Allah knows best.”
