Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

this was a man renowned for prodigious memory and encyclopaedic learning.

After some time had passed we attended the funeral of another man. We took our seats, and al-Ṭabarī arrived and sat beside my father. The two launched into discussion: whenever a qaṣīda was mentioned, al-Ṭabarī would recall part of it while my father declaimed it in full; whenever some episode from the biographies was raised, the same occurred. More than once al-Ṭabarī faltered, yet my father flowed on through the whole account, and they did not fall silent until the noon prayer.

His death was dated by Ibn Qāniʿ and by Yūsuf al-Qawwās, as noted above. It has also been said that he died in 317 AH—but that is an error.

282 – al-Tarmīsī, al-Ḥasan ibn Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb
The hadith scholar and long-lived shaykh, Abū Saʿīd al-Ḥasan ibn Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb al-Hāshimī, their client, known as al-Tarmīsī; his allegiance (walāʾ) was to al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī.

He transmitted hadith from Hishām ibn ʿAmmār and others.

From him narrated: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn Dhakwān, Muḥammad ibn Muslim ibn al-Ṣimṭ, and ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Kilābī.

Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Rāzī said: He died in 323 AH.

I say: He is the source of a censured (munkar) report transmitted by the aforementioned Ibn Dhakwān, who said: “Hishām narrated to us; Baqiyyah narrated to us; Baḥīr narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdīkarib:

‘I saw the Prophet ﷺ saying, “Whoever goes to bed exhausted from his day’s work will sleep forgiven.”’ (1)
