260 – Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ, al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Baghdādī *
A leading notable and man of vast wealth: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ al-Baghdādī, the jeweler, merchant, and coppersmith.
Ibn Ṭūlūn remarked: “Nothing is sold to us except through Ibn al-Jaṣṣāṣ.”
He also narrated: “One day I was standing in the vestibule when a stewardess came out carrying a hundred jewels, each worth one thousand dinars. She said, ‘We want you to drill these gems so that they become smaller.’ I quickly took them from her, spent the rest of the day purchasing stones for one hundred thousand dirhams—each stone for a thousand—then brought them back to the stewardess and said, ‘We have drilled them.’”
