Among those who died in the same year as Abū al-Layth were: al-Ḥasan ibn Dakkah al-Iṣfahānī; the judge Abū Dharr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Bukhārī; Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Khalīl al-Jallāb; Maḥmūd ibn ʿAnbar al-Nasafī; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ashʿath al-Kūfī while he was in Egypt; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Lubābah al-Andalusī; and Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Balkhī, known as al-Dhahabī.
257 – al-Jarīrī, Abū Muḥammad the Ascetic *
He was the shaykh of the Sufis, Abū Muḥammad al-Jarīrī, the ascetic. It was said that his name was Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn; others said ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yaḥyā; still others, Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad.
He met al-Sarī al-Saqaṭī and the other senior masters, kept company with al-Junayd, and al-Junayd would defer to him; whenever al-Junayd spoke about spiritual realities he would say, “This comes from the teaching of Abū Muḥammad.”
When al-Junayd passed away, they seated al-Jarīrī in his place, and the disciples received from him the courtesies of the path.
He performed the pilgrimage in 311 AH, but on his return he was killed on the day of the engagement at al-Hubayr (1) when panicked camels trampled him. He died a martyr at the beginning of Muḥarram in 312 AH, while he was in his nineties.
(1) The encounter known as the Battle of al-Hubayr.
