The ḥadith master Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥammād said: “Ibn Zaydān died on Friday, at the time of the sun’s zenith, on the thirteenth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, 313 AH. He was ninety-one years old. I attended his funeral, and an enormous crowd of people was present. He was reliable, an authoritative transmitter, and sparing in speech. From the moment he sat until he rose, the words he repeated most were: ‘O Turner of hearts, make my heart steadfast in Your obedience!’ My eyes have never seen anyone like him.
He was born in 222 AH. I was informed that he spent sixty years—or thereabouts—without laying his side on a mattress (1). He was devoted to night prayer, held a sound creed, and was followed by a large number of people.”
