It is reported from him that he said, “I performed the pilgrimage on foot, setting out from Aleppo and returning, forty times.”
He died in Shawwal of the year 313 AH. I have obtained some of his higher chains (ʿawālī).
239 – al-Astarabādī, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn Ḥammād *
The long-lived hadith scholar: Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn Ḥammād al-Astarabādī. He narrated from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd, and their contemporaries, devoting himself to ḥadith. Those who reported from him include Abū Nuʿaym ibn ʿAdī, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥammūyah, and others.
Hamzah al-Sahmī said: “He died in Jurjān, in Ramaḍān of the year 318 AH. He possessed the books of Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah with his own transmission.”
I (al-Dhahabī) add: Abū al-Qāsim ibn Manda also recorded that as the year of his death, and I believe he reached one hundred years of age—or even surpassed it.
