Abu Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī (1) said, “Ibn Wahb had an excellent memory, yet I heard ʿUmar ibn Sahl accuse him of fabrication, and I heard Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿUqdah say:
‘ Ibn Wahb al-Dīnawarī sent me two fascicles of his singular reports from Sufyān al-Thawrī; I recognized only two ḥadiths in them, so I regarded him with suspicion.’
Al-Dāraquṭnī declared, ‘His ḥadith is to be abandoned.’
Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ said, “I heard Ibn Wahb al-Dīnawarī relate:
‘I was with Abū Zurʿah when a man from Khurāsān began reciting fabricated reports to him. Abū Zurʿah kept saying, "False!", while the man laughed and retorted, "Everything you have not memorised you call false!"
I said to him, "Good sir, what is your school of law?"
He answered, "Ḥanafī."
I asked, "What continuous chains does Abū Ḥanīfah transmit from Ḥammād?"
He fell silent, so I turned to Abū Zurʿah: "Which ḥadiths do you know that Abū Ḥanīfah narrates from Ḥammād?" Abū Zurʿah rattled off a number of them. I then said to the fellow, "Have you no shame? You aim fabricated reports at the Imām of the Muslims while you cannot recall a single ḥadith from your own Imām!"
Abū Zurʿah was delighted by this and kissed me.’”
Ibn ʿAdī the Ḥāfiẓ commented, “Some scholars accepted Ibn Wahb al-Dīnawarī and considered him truthful.”
Al-Ḥākim said, “I asked Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ about Ibn Wahb al-Dīnawarī, and he replied, ‘He was a ḥāfiẓ.’”
Al-Sulamī reported, “I asked al-Dāraquṭnī about him, and he said, ‘He used to fabricate ḥadith.’”
Ibn Abī al-Fawāris and al-Burqānī likewise transmitted from al-Dāraquṭnī the verdict, “He is to be abandoned.”
I say: He is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥamdān ibn Wahb. I have not come across any specific text of his that is openly condemned so that I might cite it; as for his tampering with the structure of the isnād, perhaps he died in 308 AH.
