217 – al-Saʿdī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maḥmūd ibn ʿAbd Allāh
The shaykh, scholar, ḥāfiẓ, and muḥaddith of Marw, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maḥmūd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Saʿdī al-Marwazī.
He studied under Ḥibbān ibn Mūsā, ʿAlī ibn Ḥujr, ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Maḥmūd ibn Ghailān, ʿUmar ibn Shabbah, and several others.
Among those who narrated from him are Abū Manṣūr al-Azharī, the jurist Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd al-Maʿdānī, Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ḥaddādī, and others.
The Imām of the Imāms, Ibn Khuzaymah, also received ḥadīth from him, and the two men died in the same year, 311 AH.
Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim said, “Reliable, trustworthy.”
Al-Khalīlī said, “A ḥāfiẓ, knowledgeable in this discipline; his father had heard from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah.”
I read to Abū al-Faḍl Ibn ʿAsākir, from Abū Rūḥ al-Harawī, who reported to us from Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn and Abū al-Naḍr al-Fāmī; they said:
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Kutubī reported to us; Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Bakr al-Khallāl al-Marwazī reported to us; Abū al-Faḍl Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ḥaddādī reported to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maḥmūd reported to us, saying: Maḥmūd ibn Ghailān narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿīd informed us, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There are two blessings in which many people are deluded: health and free time.” (1)
