Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Hanzalī said: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā informed us; Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, who said:
“I asked ʿAlqamah, ‘Did ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Night of the Jinn?’
He replied, ‘No. We were with him one night and suddenly discovered that he was missing, so we passed the worst night imaginable. When morning came, there he was, coming down from Ḥirāʾ. He said, “A caller from among the jinn came to me, so I went with him and recited the Qur’an to them.”’
“He then set off with us until he showed us their footprints and their fires. They had asked him about provisions, and he said, ‘You may have every bone over which the name of Allah has been pronounced; when any one of you picks it up it will be covered with the most abundant meat. And every dung-dropping is fodder for your mounts.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Do not use these two things for istinjāʾ (cleansing after relieving oneself), for they are the food of your brothers among the jinn.’”
This is a sound hadith with an elevated chain. (1)
It was recorded by Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, Abū ʿĪsā, and al-Nasāʾī through the narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, Ibn ʿUlayyah, and a group who heard it from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind.
Our version is abridged; the correct wording is: Ibn Masʿūd said, “We were with him.”
Al-Sarrāj’s transmission reaches Ibn al-Bukhārī with a fully connected, elevated chain.
Musallam ibn ʿAllān and al-Muʾammal ibn Muḥammad informed us; al-Kindī informed us; al-Shaybānī informed us; al-Khaṭīb informed us; Abū Saʿd al-Mālīnī informed us; Aḥmad ibn Abī ʿImrān informed us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Khālid al-Marwazī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Sarrāj informed us; my brother Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abān narrated to us; Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever comes to the Friday prayer should bathe.” (2)
