al-Barāʾ ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghanawī—on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaqīq, from Abū Hurayrah—reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Shall I inform you who are the worst people of this Ummah? They are the loquacious, pompous prattlers. Shall I tell you who are the best among you? Those of you with the finest character.”
Al-Barāʾ alone related this ḥadīth.
Al-Bukhārī included it in his book al-Adab (1).
During this same year passed away: the ḥāfiẓ Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr al-Ilbīrī al-Andalusī; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Azhar; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Naṣr al-Ṭūsī; the vizier Abū al-Ḥasan Ibn al-Furāt; ʿAbdūs ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbbād al-Hamadhānī; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Qudayd in Egypt; Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn Fāris the broker; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Hārūn ibn al-Majaddar; and the spiritual master Abū Muḥammad al-Jurayrī.

The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, trustworthy scholar, Shaykh al-Islām, and foremost ḥadīth authority of Khurasan, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Thaqafī—their client—from Khurasan,
(1) No. 1308. The report is also found in the Musnad, 2/369. Al-Bara’ b. ʿAbd Allah al-Ghanawi is weak, whereas the rest of the transmitters are trustworthy. Two corroborating chains exist: a narration from Jabir recorded by al-Tirmidhi (2018) in the section on piety and family ties, which he graded hasan, and another in the Musnad, 4/193-194, from Abu Thalabah al-Khushani. With these two supporting narrations, the hadith is sound.
Al-tharthar is the one who speaks excessively; al-mutashaddiq is the person who over-asserts himself in speech and insults others; al-mutafayhiq is the arrogant speaker.
