the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Let the one who knows the most Qur’an among you lead the prayer,” and I used to lead my people in prayer while I was still very young. (1)
Through this same chain to Ibn Khuzaymah: Abū Ḥuṣayn ibn Aḥmad ibn Yūnus narrated to us; ʿAbthar ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; Ḥuṣayn narrated from al-Shaʿbī, from Muḥammad ibn Ṣayfī, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, “Has anyone among you eaten today?”
They replied, “Some of us are fasting and some of us are not.”
He said, “Then complete the remainder of your day, and send word to the people of al-ʿArūḍ so that they, too, may complete the remainder of their day.”
This is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ), singular (gharīb) hadith.
Al-Nasāʾī also recorded it ⦗2⦘ through Abū Ḥuṣayn, and our chain concurs with his.
Al-Ḥākim said in his History: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Wāṣil al-Juʿfī in Bīkand ⦗3⦘ informed me; he said: My father narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Muḥammad narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Sinān narrated to us; Mahdī—the father of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī—narrated to me:
“ʿAbd al-Raḥmān would stay with Sufyān for ten days or more without coming home; and whenever he managed to visit us for even an hour, Sufyān’s messenger would arrive, so he would leave again and abandon us.”
Al-Ḥākim added: “This Muḥammad is, without doubt, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Khuzaymah, for Abū…"
