open it for him, but his brother refused. When Ukaydir realized this he said to Khalid, “Sir, release me—by Allah I will open it for you, for my brother will never do so while he knows I am your prisoner.” Khalid set him free; Ukaydir entered the fortress, bound his brother, opened the gates for Khalid, and said, “Do as you please.” Khalid and his men then went inside.

Ukaydir added, “Khalid, if you wish you may decide the terms, and if you prefer, let me decide.” Khalid answered, “Rather, we shall accept whatever you offer.” Ukaydir thereupon handed over 800 captives, 1,000 camels, 400 coats of mail, and 400 lances.

Khalid brought Ukaydir to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, accompanied by Yuhanna ibn Ruʾbah, the chief of Ailah. Yuhanna presented himself to the Prophet ﷺ, anxious that an expedition might be sent against him as one had been sent against Ukaydir. The two men met with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who concluded a treaty with them covering Dumat al-Jandal, Tabuk, Ailah, and Taymaʾ. He committed it to writing for them and then set out on the return journey to Medina.

ʿUrwah next mentioned an incident involving a group of hypocrites who plotted to harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but Allah made him aware of their scheme. He also referred to the building of the Mosque of Malice (Masjid al-Dirar).

Ibn Ishaq, citing a trustworthy source from the clan of ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from Tabuk when he encamped at Dhu Awan, a spot about an hour’s travel from Medina. While he had been preparing to depart for Tabuk, the builders of that mosque had come to him and said, “We have built a mosque for the infirm, for those in need, and for rainy nights. We would like you to come and lead us in prayer there.” He replied, “I am on the verge of traveling; when we return, God willing, we shall visit you.”

When the Prophet ﷺ halted at Dhu Awan, revelation descended from heaven. He therefore summoned Malik ibn al-Dukhshum and Maʿn ibn ʿAdi and said, “Go to this mosque whose owners are unjust; demolish it and burn it.” We set out at once, entered the building while its occupants were still inside, burned it, tore it down, and they scattered. Concerning this episode, the Qur’an revealed the verses that were revealed.
