Gabriel, by what deed did he attain this?” He replied, “Through his love for ‘Say: He is Allah, One’—he would recite it while standing and sitting, on the way out and on the way back, in every circumstance.
Maḥbūb is an unknown narrator; no one corroborates this report.
Al-Bakkāʾī said: Ibn Isḥāq recounted, “When morning came—on the day at al-Ḥijr—and the people had no water, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated. Allah sent a cloud that rained until everyone had drunk his fill. ʿĀṣim told me: I asked Maḥmūd ibn Labīd, ‘Were the people able to recognize the hypocrites among them?’ He said, ‘Yes, by Allah. Men from my tribe told me about one of the hypocrites: when the incident at al-Ḥijr occurred and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed so that Allah sent down the cloud and it rained, we turned to him saying, “Woe to you! Can there remain any doubt after this?” He replied, “It is only a passing cloud.”’
Ibn Isḥāq continued: Later the camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went missing, and his Companions set out to search for it. With the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a Companion named ʿImārah ibn Ḥazm—one of those present at ʿAqabah and at Badr. Lodged in his baggage was Zayd ibn al-Luṣayt al-Qaynuqāʿī, who was a hypocrite. While sitting in ʿImārah’s saddle-gear Zayd said, ‘Does Muhammad not claim to be a prophet who reports to you the news of heaven, yet he does not know where his own camel is?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with ʿImārah beside him, said, ‘A man has spoken such-and-such. By Allah, I know only what Allah has taught me, and He has informed me about the camel: it is in this valley, in a certain ravine; a tree has restrained it by its rein.’ They went and brought it back.
ʿImārah then returned to his camp and said, ‘By Allah, what an amazing thing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has just told us—something a man said, and Allah informed him of it exactly!’ One of the men in ʿImārah’s camp, who had not been with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said, ‘By Allah, it was Zayd who uttered that statement earlier…’
