Gabriel, by what deed did he attain that?” He replied, “By his constant recitation of ‘Say: He is Allah, One’ (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, 1); he would recite it standing, sitting, mounted, and walking.” This is a mursal report.
Ibn Jawṣā, ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd al-Rāzī, and Abū al-Daḥdāḥ Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad—this wording is his—said: Nūḥ ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥawwā al-Saksakī narrated to us; Baqīyah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ziyād al-Alhānī narrated to us, from Abū Umāmah, who said: Gabriel descended upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at Tabūk and said, “Attend the funeral of Muʿāwiyah ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Muzanī.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and Gabriel came down with seventy thousand angels. He placed his wing on the mountains, so they humbled themselves until they could see Mecca and Madinah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Gabriel, and the angels then offered the funeral prayer. ʿUthmān ibn al-Haytham, the muezzin, said: Maḥbūb ibn Hilāl narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Maymūnah, from Anas, who said: Gabriel came and said, “O Muḥammad, Muʿāwiyah ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Muzanī has died; would you like to pray over him?” He replied, “Yes.” Gabriel struck with his wing, and not a single tree or hillock remained unmoved. The Prophet prayed over him, and behind him stood two rows of angels, each row comprising seventy thousand angels. I said, “O…"
