With this same chain he said: My father Abū Jaʿfar informed me, “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Hāshim narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us.”
Using this same route he said: al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān informed us; ʿAbbās al-Narsī narrated to us; al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed the name ʿĀṣiyah (disobedient) and said: “You are Jamīlah (beautiful).”
Again with this chain he said: Ibrāhīm ibn Isḥāq al-Anmaṭī informed us; Abū Qudāmah narrated to us; Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān related this same report.
Muslim also recorded it (1) through the transmission of Abū Qudāmah al-Sarkhasī.
Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: The shaykh Abū Jaʿfar kept company with Abū Ḥafṣ al-Naysābūrī and al-Shāh ibn Shujāʿ (2).
Al-Junayd used to correspond with him, and Abū ʿUthmān al-Ḥīrī would say, “Whoever wishes to behold the paths of those who live in reverent fear should look at Abū Jaʿfar.”
Al-Ḥākim said: I heard Abū ʿAmr say, “My father passed away in the year eleven…”

(1) Hadith no. 2139 in the Book of Manners, chapter: Recommendation to replace an offensive name with a good one. Abu Qudama al-Sarakhsi’s full name is Ubayd Allah ibn Sa id ibn Yahya al-Yashkuri. The hadith is reported by Ahmad in his Musnad 2/18, by Abu Dawud (4952) and al-Tirmidhi (2838) through the chain Yahya → Ubayd Allah → Ibn Umar, and by Ibn Majah (3733) through the chain Hammad ibn Salama → Ubayd Allah → Nafi → Ibn Umar.
(2) He is Abu al-Fawaris Shah ibn Shuja al-Karmani. Al-Sulami lists him in Tabaqat, pp. 192–194: “He was of royal descent, one of the most distinguished young men, authored well-known epistles, and composed the Mathalatha entitled ‘Mirror of the Wise.’ He died before the year 300.” See also Hilyat al-Awliya 10/237–238 for his biography.
