Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd narrated to us, from Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, who said:
“I witnessed ʿUthmān and ʿAlī in Mecca and Medina. ʿUthmān was forbidding the mutʿah—that is, performing ʿUmrah and Hajj together—and prohibiting that they be combined. When ʿAlī saw this, he pronounced the talbiyah for both rites, saying, ‘Here I am, O Allah, for a pilgrimage and an ʿUmrah.’ ʿUthmān said, ‘Do you see me forbidding the people while you go ahead and do it?’ He replied, ‘I would never abandon the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ because of anyone’s statement.’”
