He heard ḥadith from Safwān ibn Ṣāliḥ, Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, Ibrāhīm ibn Hishām al-Ghassānī, Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mawhib al-Ramlī, Muḥammad ibn Rumḥ, ʿĪsā ibn Ḥammād, Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Zimmānī, and several others.
Those who narrated from him include Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī, Abū ʿAlī al-Naysābūrī, Abū Hāshim al-Muʾaddib, the judge Yūsuf ibn al-Qāsim al-Mayyānajī, Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ, and many more.
Ibn al-Muqriʾ transmitted most extensively from him. He was considered the musnid of the people of Palestine, a man of learning and honesty.
Ibn al-Muqriʾ parted company with him in 309 AH, so it is likely that he died in 310 AH or thereabouts.
Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥusayn, Sulaymān ibn Abī ʿUmar, and others told us:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid wrote to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAlī informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī the grammarian informed us in 458 AH; Abū Bakr ibn al-Muqriʾ informed us in 373 AH; Ibn Qutaybah, Abū ʿArūbah, and Ibn Jawṣāʾ said:
Kathīr ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; al-Ḥasan informed us, from Sufyān, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to me while I was playing with dolls.” (1)
Hamzah al-Sahmī said: I asked al-Dāraquṭnī about Ibn Qutaybah al-Lakhmī and he replied, “Reliable.”
