Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and ʿAlī ibn Salamah al-Labaqī, Saʿdān ibn Naṣr, his contemporaries in Baghdad, and Abū Zurʿah and Abū Ḥātim in Rayy.

Those who reported from him include: his son, the judge ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd; the jurist Aḥmad ibn Hārūn; and a number of others.

Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥākim said, “He was the uncontested imam of the people of raʾy in his era.”

I say: He died in 309 AH in Naysābūr, at a little over eighty years of age. There was a dispute between him and Ibn Khuzaymah, such that Abū Bakr hosted that banquet—the like of which had never been heard of for any shaykh and which was attended by thousands of merchants and jurists—immediately after the judge’s death.

May Allah have mercy on them all.
