170 – Muḥammad ibn Shadal ibn ʿAlī, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Hāshimī * (1)
The imām, ḥadīth scholar, Qur’an reciter, and long-lived authority: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Hāshimī, their client, from Nīshāpūr.
He received narrations from Abū Muṣʿab al-Zuhrī, Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān “Luwayn,” ʿAmr ibn Zurārah, Hannād ibn al-Sarī, al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk, Aḥmad ibn Ḥarb, Abū Marwān al-ʿUthmānī, and Harmalah ibn Yaḥyā—most likely meeting the last of these in Mecca, for he never travelled to Egypt.
Al-Ḥākim said: Abū Muḥammad ibn Ziyād narrated to us: We asked Ibn Shadal about his lineage and he replied, “Muḥammad ibn Shadal ibn ʿAlī ibn Burd ibn Sawwār ibn Jaʿfar ibn Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Hāshimī.”
Those who transmitted from him include ʿAlī ibn ʿĪsā, Aḥmad ibn al-Khiḍr al-Shāfiʿī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿd the ḥāfiẓ, Aḥmad ibn Sahl al-Anṣārī, Judge Yūsuf al-Mayānajī, Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim, and others.
Al-Ḥākim also said: I heard Ṭāhir ibn Aḥmad al-Warrāq say, “Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn Shadal has died; he used to complete a full reading of the Qur’an every day, and he had lost his sight twenty years before his death.”
He died on Sunday, the twelfth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, 311 AH.
Al-Ḥākim further said: I heard Abū Saʿīd the muʾadhdhin say that he died in Ṣafar, 309 AH.
