He died in 307 AH. Others said he passed away in 308, while yet another report places his death in 306. Allah knows best. The critics deemed him trustworthy and accepted his narrations.
166 – al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ṭayyib ibn Ḥamzah, Abū ʿAlī al-Shujāʿī *
A hadith scholar and indefatigable traveller: Abū ʿAlī al-Shujāʿī, originally from Balkh but later resident in Baghdad, the nephew of the ḥāfiẓ al-Ḥasan ibn Shujāʿ.
In Baghdad he narrated from Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd, Hudbah ibn Khālid, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr, Abū Kāmil al-Jahdarī, and many others.
Those who transmitted from him include Ismāʿīl al-Khuṭabī, Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī, Muḥammad ibn al-Muẓaffar, Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Warrāq, and a number of others.
Al-Dāraqutnī said, “He is worth nothing, for he reported what he had not heard.” Ibn ʿUqdah spoke of him in the same vein. Al-Barqānī remarked, “His ḥadith is to be discarded.” Al-Ismāʿīlī, however, held a favorable opinion of him. Muṭayyin declared, “He is a liar.”
He died in 307 AH. I (the author) say: he had reached his nineties.
