144 – Maḥmūd ibn Muḥammad ibn Mannūyah, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Wāsiṭī—an eminent ḥāfiẓ, a useful scholar.
He heard ḥadith from Muḥammad ibn Abān al-Wāsiṭī, Wahb ibn Baqiyyah, al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm, and several others.
Those who transmitted from him include al-Ṭabarānī, Muḥammad ibn Zanjawayh al-Qazwīnī, Ibn ʿAdī, Abū al-Shaykh, and others. He lost the power of speech two years before his death.
More narrators who related from him were Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī and Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Jiʿābī. He also taught and narrated in Baghdad.
His name was inverted in the collection of ʿAbd al-Ghanī ibn Saʿīd, the ḥāfiẓ, who referred to him as “Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd ibn Mannūyah.” Abū al-Ṭāhir al-Dhuhlī supplied us with his correct lineage.
Ibn Mākūlā (1) said: “He is Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mannūyah, Abū ʿAbd Allāh; he narrates from Muḥammad ibn Abān al-Wāsiṭī and Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Jarjarāʾī.”
Ibn Nuqṭah pointed out their error regarding his name, but excused ʿAbd al-Ghanī, explaining: “Maḥmūd had two sons, Aḥmad and Muḥammad, both of whom transmitted ḥadith.”
al-Dāraquṭnī said: “I wrote down ḥadith from Abū al-Ḥusayn Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd al-Wāsiṭī.”
I say: The ḥāfiẓ Maḥmūd ibn Muḥammad died in the month of Ramaḍān, in the year seven
