found in the Ṣaḥīḥ, countering it with worthless reports and obstinately asserting that they are more authentic and stronger—may Allah grant us well-being.
- Wakīʿ, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Khalaf ibn Ḥayyān al-Ḍabbī *
The imam, ḥadith scholar, historian, and judge: Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Khalaf ibn Ḥayyān ibn Ṣadaqah al-Ḍabbī al-Baghdādī, nicknamed Wakīʿ, the author of many useful works.
He narrated from Abū Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī, al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah, and their peers, and he reported prolifically.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū ʿAlī ibn al-Ṣawwāf, Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Jiʿābī, Muḥammad ibn al-Muẓaffar, Abū al-Faraj—the author of The Book of Songs—Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Mutayyam, and others.
Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Munādī said, “Transmit little from him, for he was known for leniency.”
Al-Dāraquṭnī remarked, “He was noble, eloquent, virtuous, and among the people of the Quran, jurisprudence, and grammar; he produced many writings.”
I say: he served as judge over all the districts of Ahwāz and died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 306 AH.
