I might be put to trial by the women of the Byzantines, so grant me leave, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and said, “I have given you leave.” Thereupon the verse was revealed: “And among them is he who says, ‘Grant me leave and do not expose me to temptation.’ Surely, they have already fallen into temptation.” (Qur’an 9:49)
One of the hypocrites also said, “Do not march out in the heat,” and the verse was sent down: “Say: The Fire of Hell is far hotter.” (Qur’an 9:81)
No one spent more lavishly than ʿUthmān, who supplied two hundred camels.
ʿAmr b. Marzūq narrated: al-Sakan b. Abī Karīmah told us, from al-Walīd b. Abī Hishām, from Farqad Abū Ṭalḥah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khabbāb, who said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was urging support for the Army of Hardship. ʿUthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—rose and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I pledge one hundred camels with their saddles and packs for the sake of Allah.” The Prophet urged again, and ʿUthmān stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I pledge two hundred camels with their saddles and packs for the sake of Allah.” Then the Prophet exhorted a third time—ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said, “or he said: he encouraged a third time”—and ʿUthmān rose and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I pledge three hundred camels with their saddles and packs for the sake of Allah.” ʿAbd al-Raḥmān added, “I myself heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit saying, ‘Nothing ʿUthmān does after today will ever harm him,’ or he said, ‘after this.’” This was related by Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī and others from al-Sakan b. al-Mughīrah.
Ḍumrah reported, from Ibn Shawdhab, from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Qāsim, from Kathīr, the client of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Samurah, from his patron, who said: ʿUthmān brought one thousand dinars to the Prophet ﷺ when he was outfitting the Army of Hardship. He poured them into the Prophet’s lap, and the Prophet turned them over with his hand, saying, “Nothing will harm ʿUthmān for whatever he does after today,” repeating this several times.
